Welcome
To Hanes Haus
Hanes Haus, on Main St. in beautiful, downtown, historic Alachua, is a hidden gem!
Nostalgia takes center stage at Hanes Haus. This beautiful Victorian craftsman, originally the Thigpen House, has been a cherished landmark since construction in 1898. The charming Shiplap exterior and columned porches, give way to a Victorian interior that boasts high ceilings, elegant chandeliers, and original heart pine flooring and trim throughout. Lee and Siobhan Hanes are the proud (and only third) owners of this remarkable property, which holds a rich history as the site of Alachua's first drug store owner Joe Thigpen, who owned and operated his pharmacy, also on Main St. (currently the Flooring Store). Joe and his wife Doris raised their family and ran the drug store from 1940 until his passing in 1970. The year his son, Joe Thigpen III, graduated from UF with his PhD. Young Joe made the largest cash contribution to UF at that time to help students. The Thigpen family lived in the house until 1997. At which time in December, the Morse family agreed to purchase the home. The Morse family began a $360,000 renovation in 1998. Cottingham Builders updated the house with modern amenities while preserving the historical character. The renovations took several years to complete and included a kitchen, living room, dining room, wet bar, 2 bathrooms (1 ADA compliant) a laundry room, and over 1,270 square feet of covered porch, an oversized ADA-compliant ramp, 235ft of concrete driveway including a run off basin brick area and an ADA parking space and additional parking space on the south side of the property on Main Street. There is a large, upstairs heated and cooled area —all marking a century of love and care for this treasured home that sits on 2 lots and over 1/2 an acre of Commercial Central Business District zoning. The house being situated on historic Main street is also on the National Registry of Historic Places. Allowing for business, retail and residential use. The Hanes both live and work in Hanes Haus, while continually enhancing the property through maintenance and the addition of many fruit trees, several fountain and pond features and many exotic plants and bushes.
Siobhan, retired from accounting, has been a successful Airbnb Superhost since 2017 when they purchased the home. Lee built an 840 sf metal shop to house his 14 foot computer numerical controlled router (CNC) and has gifted the city of Alachua with various signs, most notably The Alachua Women's Club on Main Street, which the Hanes donated and dedicated to Roseanne Morse, the second owner of the home, who was the dearest advocate for the club and created the scholarship program that benefits students year after year. Roseanne regrettably passed shortly after selling the home and moving away.
Lee and Siobhan Hanes are happy and grateful to have guests stay at Hanes Haus. When Lee is not at his regular 40 hour week job and Siobhan is not cleaning rooms, they keep busy in their storefront where Siobhan sells Lee's creations made on his CNC and her collection of antiques and collectibles.
